Projects / tasks:

During an internship with our company, you will get exposure to the most advanced robotic arms in the world and be given opportunities to understand them further from a mechanical, electrical, software, or mechatronics perspective, depending on your engineering discipline and interests. Tasks in the internship will include:

  • Mechanical Design of new components in CAD Software, Software Design of new Interface Features, Electrical Design of new circuitry

  • Real-world testing. Deploy and test our robotic arms on real vehicles.

  3.  Mechanical testing support including potential test program development and execution. Opportunities exist to work with instrumented Crash Test Dummies and instrumented test equipment; Novel industrial testing for mining, defence, etc.; and dynamic, environment, durability, and vibration test programs for Automotive and Industrial.

Technical skills:

  • Prior experience with Solid Works would be advantageous.
  • Industrial Engineer, ability to look at existing processes, look at practical automation opportunities. Understanding of the principles Production and Quality Control. Knowledge of PFMEAs, PCPs, Value Stream Mapping, etc. would be advantageous. Needs to be practical in their thinking, and optimise both Manual, Automated and Test operations.
  • Materials and/or Mechanical Engineer with good knowledge of material properties and design to withstand dynamic forces. Good problem-solving skills to address the current design deficiencies to overcome current performance failures. Understanding of plastics, metals and glass filled plastics and alternative low weight materials.
  • Test Engineers. Skill requirements are relatively open. However, an engineer with Kinematics interest, Physics and mechanical engineering are prime for these roles.

JORN Sounders and Transponders (S&T) project goal is to update ionospheric sounders and JORN transponders across Australia. As part of the production of the updated hardware, a rigorous testing will be conducted, including sophisticated RF measurements. MarIInE lab is a specialised research facility at the Australian Maritime College (AMC). It includes environmental, risk and safety academics and Centre of Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics students of AMC. This group is actively collaborating with national and internationally known researchers in the field. Also, it collaborates with the government and national and international shipping, defence, and offshore industry. Its research interest includes a wide range of theoretical and applied research activities mainly related to these industries.

Key areas of services available through the MarIInE lab include:

  • Academic and commercial research on maritime Infrastructure Integrity and Environmental issues.
  • Providing new knowledge to solve complex problems related to environmental, safety, reliability and risk engineering.
  • Developing new technology to improve the safety and sustainability of shipping, offshore and onshore oil & gas, and mining operations.

Projects / tasks:

The intern will be involved in the ARC project to design and build an experimental corrosion-fatigue test set-up in the MarIInE lab. The lab has all the required tools and resources. The intern will prepare samples and conduct testing and analysis to model damage initiation and growth on naval vessels. The research findings will be documented to prepare high-quality scientific reports. The intern will be closely supervised in all activities and work in a team.

Technical skills:

Interns from mechanical engineering and naval architecture backgrounds are desirable. Programming experience in MatLab with a willingness to learn is required. Prior experience in working in a laboratory setting is beneficial.
