Business description:

MarIInE lab is a specialised research facility at the Australian Maritime College (AMC). It includes environmental, risk and safety academics and Centre of Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics students of AMC. This group is actively collaborating with national and internationally known researchers in the field. Also, it collaborates with the government and national and international shipping, defence, and offshore industry. Its research interest includes a wide range of theoretical and applied research activities mainly related to these industries.

Key areas of services available through the MarIInE lab include:

  • Academic and commercial research on maritime Infrastructure Integrity and Environmental issues.
  • Providing new knowledge to solve complex problems related to environmental, safety, reliability and risk engineering.
  • Developing new technology to improve the safety and sustainability of shipping, offshore and onshore oil & gas, and mining operations.

Projects / tasks:

Project #1

The intern will investigate, consider and report on Autonomous Maritime System data management and workflows. Specifically, the internship will focus on how AMS data produced by the facilities’ operational AUVs/USVs can best be handled, stored and readily accessed.

Autonomous Maritime Systems, i.e. AUVs and USVs record large amounts of sensor and platform data. This data is both time and geo referenced. The creation of robust data workflows, systems and management processes can allow this data to be used to support operational as well as technical outcomes.

Equipment manufactures of AUV’s and USVs do not focus on post mission data handling and management systems. This is an area of interest to the AMC and also the Commonwealth as they continue to take up and employ AMS technologies.

A variety of design, coding, and testing tasks are required to bring this project to life. This project will extend on one undertaken by our company in support of the Commonwealth in Q2 2023.

Project #2

The intern will investigate, consider and report on Autonomous Maritime System cyber vulnerabilities. Specifically, the internship will focus on how AMS million plans and data produced by the facilities’ operational AUVs/USVs can best be handled, transmitted, stored and kept secure.

Autonomous Maritime Systems, i.e. AUVs and USVs rely on common technology stacks, though they may not receive software updates as frequently as desktop computers or servers. They are therefore potentially vulnerable to the malicious alteration of planned missions, reliable execution and post-mission data alteration, exfiltration or loss through cyber attacks.

Threat assessment is to include both the identification of vulnerabilities in the field and during pre and post-mission activities.

A variety of design, coding, and testing tasks are required to bring this project to life. This project area is a high priority for the AMSL research group and one that we are actively investigating.

Technical skills:

Project #1

Programming experience in Python or Matlab with a willingness to learn is required.

Experience with JSON, SQLite, or other data storage and communication standards are desirable. Familiarity with GIS applications, protocols, and standards are also valuable.

Programming experience in, C++, JavaScript, or HTML are desirable.

Project #2

Programming experience in Python or Matlab with a willingness to learn is required.

Familiarity with penetration testing, packet sniffing, MitM attacks, Wifi pineapples, denial of service, or acoustic modems are particularly desirable.

Knowledge of communication standards such as TCP/UDP and RS232, general networking, and software/hardware interfacing and experience with LINUX/OSX based computers would be beneficial.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

Strong communication skills are needed to work with the project leader and team of AUV/USV engineers to capture specifications, report on progress, manage issues and document developments/progress.

The candidate will need to work within a multi-disciplinary team from varying technical backgrounds.
