The Australian Space Agency selected our flight operations service called the “Responsive Space Operations Centre” (RSOC) for their national mission control centre. We specialise in large constellations and fleet control (100+ satellite) and machine learning applications to space.

Projects / tasks:

There are a wide range of tasks for space that interns can participate in, including machine learning, spacecraft design, orbital analysis and cloud computing for spacecraft command and control. Prior interns worked on space weather analytics to fill gaps in critical data, orbital mechanics, the design of large 100+ constellations, and spacecraft design.

Technical skills:

If the student can code we can teach them to do space: Orbital mechanics, spacecraft design, SATCOM, space physics.

Students that can code and do space are high interest but preference is for C#/Unity coders. Interns wishing to go into the Machine Learning and Spacecraft Engineering streams should have a good knowledge of Python and/or C/C++.

Software Development Requirements: Python and/or C/C#, git, Linux environments,

Preferred but not essential: Cloud architectures and development, databases, microservices.

Engineering, Computer Science/Software Engineering, Physics, game development degrees, but any degree with strong maths and programming skills is welcome.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

  • Engineers, tinkerers, and builders.
  • People who are passionate about space.
  • People who are not afraid to make mistakes

Business description:

We are a professional services company focussed on providing research, development and engineering services for companies wanting to engage in the application of fibre reinforced composite materials and structures. The services provided include: training; conceptual and detailed analysis of composite structures; the manufacture, test, repair and inspection of samples/specimens through to sub-component prototypes to validate the analysis and/or concept. Our company also manufactures advanced composites products and assemblies designed on behalf of the customer. We focus on achievement of cost-effective, practical solutions through partnership with our clients, which include leading Australian and international businesses in the Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Transportation, Mining and Defence industries.

Projects / tasks:

We have a number of engineering projects running at any one time within the organisation. Some of these projects are Defence related, which usually involve the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group. The specific details of the projects will depend on what project is active at the time, but they would normally be focussed on the design and analysis of defect/damage of aircraft structures, the development of repairs and/or methodologies for these repairs and processing and development and evaluation of high temperature composite materials. We would also anticipate providing the intern with some exposure to other active projects at the time, in particular which are more workshop-based activities to give them a broader experience during their internship.

Technical skills:

It would be preferred if the intern has had some exposure to finite element analysis software packages, CAD/CAE packages and programming.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

Our ideal intern will be someone who has performed strongly academically during their degree course to date and is enthusiastic to apply their learning into practice. We are particularly interested in interns who are both practical and have a strong interest in numerical and finite element analysis. Some background knowledge in composite materials would also be ideal.

Business description:

We are a technology-driven company who has achieved worldwide success with its pipeline of deep-tech innovations that have aligned the company with growing new technologies around the world. Our products are found on everything from high-altitude pseudo-satellites, to 2000m below the sea, through to numerous scientific, Defence and industrial applications. Our interns will learn what is needed to be successful in the global high-tech design and manufacturing industries.

We have R&D, Production, Customer Support and Sales all under one roof. We are also unusual in that our Software and Hardware Directors are world-leading experts in their respective fields. Our intern will have day-to-day interactions and coaching with and by them and our multidisciplinary team, mentoring them on the standards that must be met to develop world-leading technologies.

We have a deep commitment to the development of our people, especially interns. We have now hired several outstanding individuals at the end of their internship and take tremendous pride in inculcating strong engineering values.

Projects / tasks:

Tasks involving development, manufacturing and operation of subsea navigation equipment and robotics.

OR

Tasks involving the design, testing and manufacturing of inertial navigation systems and associated systems.

OR

Tasks involving the design, test and manufacture of optical navigation systems.

Technical skills:

Mathematics, Matlab, Software (C++, Java or Frontend skills).

Mechatronics backgrounds are particularly valuable to us.

Photonics/optics backgrounds are very useful for some roles.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

For all of the possible roles we are looking for people that are passionate about robotics, automation and solving big problems.

For mechanical engineering opportunities:

  • An ideal intern would be passionate about mechanical engineering / mechatronics, hands on design (solidworks), hands on prototyping, documenting designs (drawings & specifications) and outcomes from development testing.
  • We match the work to the level of the intern but they must be excited about working in a R&D hardware team that designs Subsea products.

For mechatronic and electronic/electrical engineering opportunities:

  • An ideal intern would be passionate about electronics, hands on design, hands on prototyping using soldering irons, simulations circuits using LTSpice, designing circuits schematics and printed circuit boards with Altium.
  • We match the work to the level of the intern but they must be excited about working in a R&D hardware team that designs Subsea products.

For software engineering opportunities:

  • The main quality for the software team is a demonstrated hobby for anything software. It is usually illustrated by a Github profile with a couple of interesting. repositories. We are not looking for “tutorial” repositories (i.e. TODO app in React) but quirky projects developed for the sake of the beauty in software, technology, and/or problem-solving.
