Projects / tasks:

We have two candidate projects for potential interns to contribute to.

1. Working alongside our resources within the Explosive Ordinance Branch you will provide systems engineering support to a software implementation project for the EO Branch. This project is implementing a new system that enables the comprehensive configuration management of ADF ordinance across Army Navy and Air Force.

2. Our Framework Development: we have a generic framework for the re-engineering of defence capability acquisition and sustainment, which we wish to implement into a software based solution. This project requires the analysis of the existing framework and the design, coding and implementation of the solution. This task will provide the candidates an opportunity to scope, plan and execute a project to deliver the Framework reporting to us as the “client” as well as working along side the software vendor.

Technical skills:

Successful candidates would require a sound understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle and software engineering practices and have demonstrated ability to code and effectively test software. We do not require specific skills in a coding language, but a demonstrated working knowledge of software development tools, operating systems, systems administration, and database management is highly regarded. An interest and/or understanding of cloud computing (AWS/Azure) and relevant networking technologies is a bonus as is an understanding of Cyber and/or identity management.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

Interpersonal skills are highly regarded with the ability to communicate openly and demonstrate active listening skills. Ability to self-start and monitor tasks is highly regarded as is understanding of when to ask for assistance.

A  space  engineering  company dedicated  to  next  generation  space  operations, using machine learning and gaming graphics to greatly reduce the challenge of operating spacecraft. The company has active laboratories in Sydney, Adelaide and Colorado. We sell operations services and spaceflight software to both government and civil customers to include the Australian Defence Force, Fortune 500 and NewSpace companies, US Space Force, and NASA.  Our flight operations service, the “Responsive Space Operations Centre” (RSOC) is the  Australian Space Agency’s national mission control centre. We specialise in large constellations and fleet control (100+ satellite) and machine learning applications to space.

We have a Defence Innovation Hub contract to develop an intelligent data fusion network to process a large number of space objects. This is a Phase II project which combines machine learning with our heritage space operations capability for the RAAF.

Additionally, we run the Pacific Cell of SACT, which is a joint multinational exercise which involves the ADF, USSF, and French Space Command.

Projects / tasks:

There are a wide range of tasks for space that interns can participate in, including machine learning, spacecraft design, orbital analysis and cloud computing for spacecraft command and control. Prior interns worked on space weather analytics to fill gaps in critical data, orbital mechanics, the design of large 100+ constellations, and spacecraft design.

Technical skills

If the student can code we can teach them to do space: Orbital mechanics, spacecraft design, SATCOM, space physics. Students that can code and do space are high interest but preference is for C#/Unity coders. Interns wishing to go into the Machine Learning and Spacecraft Engineering streams should have a good knowledge of Python and/or C/C++.

Software Development Requirements: Python and/or C/C#, git, Linux environments.

Preferred but not essential: Cloud architectures and development, databases, microservices.

Engineering, Computer Science/Software Engineering, Physics, game development degrees but any degree with strong maths and programming skills is welcome.

Working alongside Project Engineers and Superintendents from the beginning to end of a construction project lifecycle, the intern will be delegated key support tasks such as creating work schedule program and updates, and collating project meeting minutes, developing quality assurance documentation (Safe Work Method Statements, Inspection & Test Plans, Commissioning checklists etc). The Intern will be provided opportunities across the placement to visit our construction worksites and build an understanding of how the planning, designing and coordination work in the front-end of the project help lay the foundations for the project execution.

Projects / tasks

The project will help build software tools, simulation assets and scenarios which are used to create and improve synthetic imagery which will be used to develop AI technologies for sighting and vision systems. This work will be in support of a collaboration between our research staff and the University of Adelaide which aims to demonstrate next generation coordinated autonomous sensing of naval assets in dynamic maritime environments.  The interns are expected to have knowledge and experience of either computer games development or deep learning for machine vision applications.

The interns will have the freedom to propose and explore a number of options and approaches and will be guided and supported by engineers and scientists in our Research and Technology team. Further, they will have the opportunity for significant collaborative engagement with PhD students and a Postdoc at the University of Adelaide.  They will put what they have learned to use to generate tools to support this naval centric research project and consider and propose opportunities for further development of this technology.
