Hardware Engineer:

An ideal intern would be passionate about electronics, hands on design, hands on prototyping using soldering irons, simulations circuits using LTSpice, designing circuits schematics and printed circuit boards with Altium.

The company will match the work to the level of the intern but they must be excited about working in a R&D hardware team that designs Inertia Navigation Systems.

Software Engineer:

The main quality for the software team is a demonstrated hobby for anything software. It is usually illustrated by a Github profile with a couple of interesting repositories. They are not looking for “tutorial” repositories (i.e. TODO app in React) but quirky projects developed for the sake of the beauty in software, technology, and/or problem-solving.

Embedded Engineer:

Applicants showing personal drive and an ambition to better themselves in embedded software development. This can be shown by personal projects, involvement in things like Robotics Clubs, Motorsport teams or other similar groups. During interviews we will test applicants on practical application of code to solve a problem.

For an embedded role they would expect the applicant to have purchased a microcontroller (Arduino board for example) and done a simple project with it.

For a non embedded role we would expect an applicant to have written a program to do something for themself or others.

Photonics Team:

An ideal intern for the Photonics team will have a background in optics and photonics, and who is passionate about using lasers to measure things. An interest in telecommunications, optical fiber sensing, LiDAR, or interferometry is desirable.

Experience with modelling and simulations in Matlab, Python, Zemax, or C will be highly regarded. The company employs a model-based design approach to photonic system development where computational models and simulations play an integral role.

You must be passionate about working with photonic and optical systems, and should have experience working with conventional test and measurement hardware (e.g., oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, etc.)

Design and printing of prototype equipment to fit sensor and communications equipment onto small vehicles. The candidate will need to analysis the equipment and work with our systems integration manager on the best location and method to do the installation. Once the analysis is done the design of a prototype would need to be drawn up on CAD software and then printed. Once a prototype has been designed, work with the team to find the best final manufacturing process and then send the item out for manufacture or to be built in house.

A management, engineering, and design team for a series of manufacturing entities. The core business is engineering design and manufacturing, both locally and overseas. The company takes on a range of unique projects ranging from large scale reverse engineering and machining for the mining sector to rapid 3D print prototyping for small businesses around Perth. They are heavily involved in full design cycle projects, translating client ideas into large scale manufacturable products and ongoing product supply.

Projects / tasks:

The daily work of the engineers takes three main formats, reverse engineering of components, new concept design and existing project revisions. The work tasks include 3D scanning of components, CAD design, preparing manufacturing drawings/DXFs/Models, prototype manufacturing, conducting client meetings, supplier liaison and providing manufacturing estimates.

The intern will be conducting all these tasks on projects from all industries, including Defence. They will be involving the intern on projects with several of their existing clients as well allowing them to have design freedom on certain projects with oversight. Where relevant and if the intern wishes, training in 3D printing, scanning and CNC machining will be provided.

Technical skills:

Computer aided design (CAD) is a crucial skill as most of our design work is done in CAD software. Whilst they a mixture of CAD software, Solidworks experience is preferred. Basic usage of Outlook, Word, Excel and PDF processing is also essential. Prior experience with 3D printing slicer software may be helpful; however, it is not critical. A willingness and ability to quickly learn new software packages are more important than specific experience.

Intern interpersonal qualities:

Should be able to work independently on engineering projects and be willing to learn quickly. As they are primarily an engineering design business, interns interested in design with a practical mindset will be looked at favourably. Interns with co-curricular involvement in practical clubs such as university motorsport teams, rocket clubs, robotics clubs etc., will be well suited to this position, as will interns who have practical hobbies outside of university. A large portion of their work is meeting and discussing ideas with clients and discussing designs within the team to draw on more experienced team members and make educated design choices. As such, the ideal intern should be comfortable talking to people on engineering topics and enjoy working within a team.
