The DIIP is open to third and fourth year students studying at an Australian University, completing an undergraduate degree in the engineering or technology disciplines. Please see the engineering internship or technology internship pages of this website for specific information on the disciplines.

In the application process section of the website, information is provided on both the steps in the selection process and the documents to be submitted. It is strongly recommended that all applicants read this section of the website carefully before submitting an application. The documents required to support your application include an up to date resume, evidence of your Australian citizenship, academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation.

Internships can be completed full-time, part-time or as a combination of both. Many students choose to take their internship as 12-week full-time block either over the summer break period or during a semester. Some students do a block of full-time work during a study break and then complete their 450-hour placement on a part-time basis during a semester, around their study timetable.

Each student will be matched to a defence industry host offering an internship opportunity relevant to each students area of study and individual career goals. While each internship opportunity will be different, placements typically allow interns to work on complex projects, using advanced technology with a focus on a ‘real world’ defence industry challenges. Successful applicants will be provided with information on industry hosts and work focus’ throughout the selection process.

Typically participation in the DIIP is not considered for study credit, however on occasions, with formal agreement from your university, a Work Integrated Learning placement for credit can be designed. Any such arrangement would need to be agreed in writing between the University Faculty and the DIIP team at The Career Network.

A core purpose of the DIIP is to introduce engineering and technology students to the exciting and rewarding career pathways available in the defence industry. While completing a DIIP internship does not guarantee a graduate role with your industry host, it will put you in a strong position to secure a job either with your host, or another organisation within the sector.

All applicants will be advised at each stage of the selection process whether they have been successful or unsuccessful in progressing to the next step. By emailing a request to the DIIP selection team on recruitment@thecareernetwork.com.au, specific feedback relating to your application can be provided.

The DIIP team maintains regular contact with both interns and defence industry hosts to ensure a positive experience. Interns can expect at least six check-ins during a 12-week internship, which may be done through video calls, face-to-face visits, or other agreed methods.

Interns in the DIIP program will have access to one-on-one career guidance, employability workshops, career development tools, and access to a digital employability passport. This passport helps interns track their skills and experiences relevant to a defence industry career.

Interns can raise any issues or concerns about the internship through the regular check-ins from the DIIP project team. There is also an issue escalation process and a person you can contact for any immediate concerns. You will be given these details at the commencement of your internship.

Defence Industry Hosts participating in the DIIP have been carefully selected and are expected to provide a safe, supportive work environment, and are also required to provide meaningful duties and effective supervision for interns.

DIIP is committed to increasing diversity in the defence industry by encouraging participation from all who want to apply to be an intern, and defence industry hosts that prioritise diversity in their hiring practices. Internships are promoted nationwide, and the program targets a wide range of institutions to encourage applications from diverse backgrounds.

DIIP collects data to track the impact and outcomes of the internship program. This includes information on employment trends, program effectiveness, and long-term patterns, to help improve future rounds of the DIIP.
