Integration of radio systems onto the platform followed by adding the drone to our command and control software. Testing of the command links and that the drone is able to operate safely with additional hardware and software installed.

Assisting in the development of robotic cells for grinding, cut-off and sandblasting operations in the foundry environment.

Technical skills:

Understanding of 3D CAD systems (Solidworks preferred), Roboguide.

Development of Software Systems for Command and Control of Electronic Radio Frequency Sensors and Systems, current projects include Networked Electronic Warfare Sensor systems.

Projects / tasks

(Data Science and Machine Learning) Designing Intelligent Adversarial Anomaly Detection utilising deep neural networks for a custom simulation environment. The project provides exposure to both traditional and contemporary techniques for supervised and unsupervised methods. The intern will have individual support and mentoring from machine learning and data science industry professionals proficient in state-of-the-art machine learning practices.

Technical skills

Python, NumPy, Pandas, PyTorch and/or TensorFlow.

Intern interpersonal qualities

Ability to work through problems autonomously and willingness to learn new packages/frameworks as required. Some experience with scientific computing is required, whether through coursework or personal learning.

Business description:

We manufacture and market a submersible marine marker buoy and retrieval system, used in defence (Australia, US, Belgium) as well as research and fishing.

Projects / tasks:

Some our technology is now out dated, both in terms of electronics hardware as well as software, in particular the User Interfaces. We would like the intern to understand the function of the current technology and why it operates the way it does, specifically for defence requirement, then look at contemporary equivalents to do the same job, particularly with consideration to users expectations of how things should and do work now (ie. Phone apps etc), balanced against defence security issues. The system utilizes subsea through-water acoustic communications technology.

Technical skills:

C+ or C# and advantage but not vital, an understanding of relevant hardware and electronics would be needed.

Would be required to take part in field trials at times on a boat, inshore only.

We develop autonomous detection solutions for airborne search and surveillance applications with Defence and civil security organisations. Our core focus is software processing high resolution video in real-time but our solutions now extend to include design and specification of custom hardware to add cameras, processing and locational hardware to manned and unmanned aircraft. We have supplied solutions to ADF, primarily Army and Navy, and also provide solutions to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. We design, manufacture and market High Frequency (HF) and Very High Frequency (VHF) radio communications equipment to Defence, government and peacekeeping organizations globally.

Projects / tasks

Be part of the team which is developing an app that enhances our current HF mail gateway product. This application will change the type of data transmission that the HF mail gateway uses to transfer files over the air. Changes will also be required for the GUI part of the system.

Business description:

A  space  engineering  company dedicated  to  next  generation  space  operations, using machine learning and gaming graphics to greatly reduce the challenge of operating spacecraft. The company has active laboratories in Sydney, Adelaide and Colorado. We sell operations services and spaceflight software to both government and civil customers to include the Australian Defence Force, Fortune 500 and NewSpace companies, US Space Force, and NASA.  Our flight operations service, the “Responsive Space Operations Centre” (RSOC) is the  Australian Space Agency’s national mission control centre. We specialise in large constellations and fleet control (100+ satellite) and machine learning applications to space.

We have a Defence Innovation Hub contract to develop an intelligent data fusion network to process a large number of space objects. This is a Phase II project which combines machine learning with our heritage space operations capability for the RAAF.

Additionally, we run the Pacific Cell of SACT, which is a joint multinational exercise which involves the ADF, USSF, and French Space Command.

Projects / tasks:

There are a wide range of tasks for space that interns can participate in, including machine learning, spacecraft design, orbital analysis and cloud computing for spacecraft command and control. Prior interns worked on space weather analytics to fill gaps in critical data, orbital mechanics, the design of large 100+ constellations, and spacecraft design.

Technical skills

If the student can code we can teach them to do space: Orbital mechanics, spacecraft design, SATCOM, space physics. Students that can code and do space are high interest but preference is for C#/Unity coders. Interns wishing to go into the Machine Learning and Spacecraft Engineering streams should have a good knowledge of Python and/or C/C++.

Software Development Requirements: Python and/or C/C#, git, Linux environments.

Preferred but not essential: Cloud architectures and development, databases, microservices.

Engineering, Computer Science/Software Engineering, Physics, game development degrees but any degree with strong maths and programming skills is welcome.
